The Ultimate Mahjong Tile Set Buying Guide: 9 Brands (And Which One Is Actually You)

A few years ago your mahjong options were basically “whatever grandma had in the hall closet.” Now there’s an entire universe of gorgeous, independent mahjong brands, and it is genuinely a lot to sort through when you’re just trying to figure out which set is actually you. So I rounded up my favorites — the ones I’ve played with, gifted, or have my eye on — organized by vibe instead of just a giant list. My codes and links are below each one. 🀄
If You Want A Set That Doubles As Home Décor
Tigre de Tartán — Tigre is known for its artist-designed prints, but the tiles are what I want you to see here. The House Hearts set ($275) has classic, traditional faces with crisp engraving and easy-to-read numerals, plus the brand’s signature heart logo set into the back of every tile. It’s in stock now in warm white and comes with a zippered pouch. The House Clovers version (also $275, with a clover logo on the back) is sold out right now but coming back. A Beautiful Line — “Designed to be seen, styled, and enjoyed” is basically the brand’s whole philosophy, and it shows. Coordinated tiles, wooden racks, and playing mats (think polka dots and nature-inspired patterns) are built to look as good sitting out on a console table as they do mid-game. Accessories run roughly $70–$120.

If You Want The Themed, Social-Club Aesthetic
Charleston Mahjong Club — Whimsical, colorful, and unapologetically themed — think Country Club, Yacht Club, and Après Ski Club collections, each with coordinated accessories that lean into an upscale social-club feel. Tiles are cut and hand-painted. Totes run around $145, mats $75.

If You Want A Serious, Heirloom-Quality Set
Mac + Miller Mahjong — Premium sets built with real intention around community and joy (the brand was founded by two CRNAs who fell in love with the game), with collections like their Heirloom “Fire + Fortune” line. Mahj Pit — Modern design over themed or preppy. The brand’s whole pitch is “designs that become heirloom rather than trend.” Their Original Confetti tiles are one of my favorite sets in my entire collection. They’re glittery and full of color, and they make me happy every time they come out. Their Commuter Skinny Tiles are genuinely clever for travel, too (thin, light, still fully readable). If You Want Handcrafted, With Room To Personalize
Mahj House Rules — “Tiles that honor timeless tradition while inviting players to make the table their own” is a good summary — handcrafted tiles across themed lines like Ranch House and Lake House, with bundle options pairing tiles and accessories. If You Want Classic Tiles, Done Beautifully
Brooklyn Mahjong — Traditional American mahjong sets with a quiet, elevated design sense, named for Brooklyn streets and inspired by the borough’s historic architecture. I don’t have a code for this one; I’m including it simply because I love their products. The set I’m dying to get is the Remsen, a rich oxblood red with warm brown undertones and crisp, high-contrast engraving. Every set comes with 160 tiles, dice, and a magnetic storage box. Sets run $295, and they sell out quickly, so it’s worth joining the waitlist if the one you want is gone.

A Quick Note On Choosing
If you’re buying your very first set, I’d start with Tigre de Tartán, Mac + Miller, or Mahj House Rules. Tigre’s House sets are one of the best values on this list at $275, and their traditional faces are easy to read while you’re still learning. Mac + Miller and Mahj House Rules are both built to actually play with regularly, not just display. If you already have a set and want something for the table itself (a mat, a rack, a pouch), Mahj Pit and Tigre de Tartán are the move. And if you just want to treat yourself to something gorgeous, honestly, any of these will do the job beautifully.
