Tigre de Tartán: The Mahjong Brand for Design Lovers

Many mahjong brands are chasing the same look right now—pastel palettes, preppy motifs, the same handful of Pinterest-friendly patterns. Tigre de Tartán is doing something different, and it’s exactly why it’s one of my favorites to recommend when someone wants their set to feel less like a game and more like an object worth displaying.

What Makes Tigre de Tartán Different

This brand leans into artist-designed patterns rather than the typical mahjong aesthetic—think prints like “Domino Oxblood,” “French Mural,” and “Plum Peony.” It has a genuinely art-collector feel compared to many mat and tile brands, more curated gallery piece than game night accessory. If you love design as much as you love the game, this is the brand that treats both with equal weight.

The Tiles I Love: House Hearts & House Clovers

Here’s the part that surprised me: Tigre de Tartán’s tiles are some of the best-priced sets in the design-forward mahjong world. Their House Hearts and House Clovers sets keep the traditional faces seasoned players know and love—Dots, Bams, Cracks, Dragons, Winds, Flowers, and Jokers, all crisply engraved and easy to read—then finish the backs with a little heart or clover. Traditional where it counts, with just enough charm to make them feel like yours. Both sets are $275.

Coming Soon: Oyster Pearl & Beechwood Sets

Two new sets are on the way, and I can’t wait to order. The House Tigers in Oyster ($295) is made from luminous oyster pearl acrylic with traditional faces and a signature tiger on every back—it’s expected in late October, and you can sign up to be notified on the product page. And the Classic American set in Beechwood ($325) brings real wood tiles with the heart logo on the reverse, dropping any day now. Wood tiles are at the very top of my list.

The Mats

Most of Tigre de Tartán’s mats run $175, including the Rules Editions like Plum Peony and Strawberry, which quietly weave the American mahjong rules into the design—a lifesaver for newer players. Special editions land around $225, like the 39-inch Nantucket Basket Round (a trompe l’œil woven basket print guests always reach out to touch) and the upcoming Birdsong collaboration with artist Katherine Hartman. Leather pouches range from $250 to $345 if you want a matching way to carry it all.

Racks, Dice & the Fun Little Extras

This is where the brand really gets playful. A few favorites:

A Little Needlepoint (My Next Hobby in Waiting)

Confession: Tigre de Tartán’s needlepoint collection is officially my next hobby in waiting. Mahjong, gardening, and now needlepoint—I’m fully leaning into my granny-hobby era, and I’ll be sharing it here as I go. Their canvases take the same artist designs from the mats and turn them into stitchable pieces, from the Mahj Baby canvases ($75) to mahjong tile canvases ($85), and even a full-size Jardín de Los Jefes mahjong mat canvas for the truly ambitious.
