Mahjong has officially made its way into the beach lifestyle here, and whether you’re a curious beginner, a competitive player, or just in it for the social scene (no judgment, that’s me too), there are more ways than ever to join in. And lately, it’s not just about where to play — it’s about what you’re playing with. Some seriously beautiful, locally-made tile sets are popping up right here on the coast, so I’m rounding those up too.

If you’ve heard whispers of mahjong on 30A, chances are it leads back to BeachMahj. They’ve built a full-on mahjong movement here — lessons for every level, from “what are these tiles?” beginner sessions to strategy-focused classes for players ready to sharpen their game. Beyond lessons, they run a Beach Mahj Social Club with regular meetups, so it’s easy to find a table even after you’ve learned the basics. I’m looking forward to joining the fall session of the Beach Mahj Social Club!
Free weekly open play sessions at local favorites like Palm 30A, Old Florida Fish House, Obscure Wine, and Heirloom Donuts (yes, mahjong and donuts — we’re living well), which means you can usually find a game without straying far from wherever you’re already spending the afternoon. They also offer set rentals, so if you’re visiting and didn’t pack a mahjong set next to your sunscreen and sandals, you’re covered.

30A Mahjong Studio is exactly the dedicated mahjong space this area needed — a real, physical home base rather than a pop-up game night. They offer a full range of programming, from beginner lessons to league play for players who want ongoing competition, plus open social games for anyone who just wants to sit down and play. Having a standalone studio means more consistent scheduling and a space designed specifically around the game, which is a nice change from squeezing a table into a coffee shop corner. I’ll be checking it out myself soon and will report back.

Another great option for locals and visitors looking to learn or refine their game. They offer structured lessons for beginners along with ongoing sessions for players who already know the basics and want to build confidence and speed. It’s a friendly, low-pressure environment — the kind of place where “I’ve always wanted to try that” quickly turns into “I have a standing mahjong night now.” Check their site or Instagram for upcoming session dates and locations.
Coming Soon: Mahjong Beach House (Miramar Beach)

And there’s more on the way. Mahjong Beach House is set to open in Miramar Plaza this August, bringing a dedicated mahjong space right to Miramar Beach. For anyone living or staying in Sandestin and Miramar Beach, this closes a real gap. Up until now, most of the dedicated studios have been focused on 30A and Destin. Having one land right in Miramar Plaza is a big deal for local accessibility. I’ll be watching this one closely and will update this post once the doors officially open, including hours and what programming they plan to offer.
Destin Mahjong Club

A great option if you’re looking for casual, social play rather than formal lessons. Destin Mahjong Club gathers players together for open games at various spots around town — no instruction, just a table, tiles, and good company. It’s an easy way to get in your table time and meet fellow players around Destin, especially if you already know how to play and just want more opportunities to sit down and go.

This Facebook group is another welcoming spot for social play, open to all skill levels. Members post and coordinate informal games happening around the area, so it functions less like a business and more like a running community bulletin board for anyone who wants to play. It’s a good one to join if you want to keep tabs on last-minute or pop-up games — perfect for anyone who just wants to show up, play, and meet people without committing to a formal class schedule.
Hotel Effie

If your ideal mahjong experience includes a chic setting and a bit of a social scene, this one’s for you. Queen of the Tiles is a stylish mahjong event hosted at Hotel Effie, where the vibe is equal parts elevated and relaxed. Think resort ambiance, a curated setting, and tiles paired with cocktails. It’s an easy one to build into a girls’ trip. Check the event page for the current schedule, since dates rotate.
🀄 Local Tile Makers Worth Knowing
This is the part I’m most excited about. Mahjong sets have become an art form, and it turns out some seriously talented tile designers call the Emerald Coast home. If you’re building a collection — or just love beautiful things at the table — keep an eye on these three.
Mac + Miller Mahjong (Gulf Breeze)

Based just down the coast in Gulf Breeze, Mac + Miller designs tile sets, mats, and racks meant to feel inclusive and personal — collections with real stories behind them, made for women of every age and season. What sets them apart is that intentionality: each collection tends to have a theme or narrative rather than just a color palette, so the set you choose actually says something about you. The selection rotates through limited collections, so it’s worth following along on Instagram to catch a set before it’s gone. These aren’t the kind of designs that stay in stock indefinitely.
Marilu Morgan — Emerald Coast Tile Set

This one is close to home. Marilu designed an Emerald Coast-themed tile set inspired by our stretch of coastline, and it’s launching end of July as a preorder. If you want a set that actually reflects the place you live (or love to visit), this is about as local as it gets. She’s hosting a series of local launch parties for anyone who wants to see and shop the set in person before it’s available more broadly:

Rosemary Beach is home to Mahj Tile Haus, whose sets lean fully into couture — think elevated coastal collections like Palm Royale, White Lotus, and Coral & Coast, designed to feel as beautiful on display as they are in play. If you’re the type who wants your mahjong set to double as a piece of home decor between game nights, this is the collection to browse first. Their designs tend to skew more polished and editorial than playful, which makes them a nice option if you already have a strong aesthetic point of view.

How to Get Started (Without Overthinking It)
If you’re new, here’s the secret: everyone starts somewhere, and most people are way nicer than you expect when you’re learning. Start with a beginner lesson, then move into guided play or social games. It’s one of those things that feels confusing at first… and then suddenly clicks (usually right around the time you get your first win).
If you’re visiting, look for open play events or consider renting a set and hosting your own game night. Mahjong at sunset? Highly recommend.
Why Mahjong Just Works at the Beach
There’s something about mahjong that fits perfectly with coastal living. It’s social without being loud, strategic without being stressful (most of the time), and just structured enough to give you a reason to gather. It’s become a real community-builder here, bringing together locals, visitors, new friends, and longtime residents over a shared table and a little friendly competition.
And honestly… it pairs surprisingly well with a glass of rosé.
