Destin does a lot of things well — the fishing, the beaches, those impossibly green waters. But the happy hour scene here is genuinely underrated, and if you know where to go, you can spend the best part of the afternoon with a cold drink in hand, water views in front of you, and a very reasonable tab at the end of it. After years of living close enough to have developed strong opinions, here’s where to go — organized by what kind of evening you’re after.
Best for Sunset Views
These are the spots where the drinks are almost secondary to what’s happening outside.
The Rooftop Bar at Henderson Beach Resort
Destin’s most elevated happy hour experience — literally. The Rooftop Bar sits above Henderson Beach State Park with unobstructed panoramic views of the Gulf. It might be the best seat in the entire city for a sunset. The menu leans into local seafood bites — tuna poke bowls, yellowtail jalapeño, sushi rolls — paired with signature craft cocktails, fine wines, and local craft beers. Live music on Fridays makes it even better. Open daily starting at 4 pm. No formal discount pricing, but for views like these, full price is still a deal.
Horizons Gastropub at Henderson Beach Resort
Right downstairs from the Rooftop, Horizons is Henderson’s more casual gastropub option. It has a proper daily happy hour from 4–6 pm with signature drink specials and shareable bites. Gulf seafood, fish tacos, wood-fired pizzas, creative cocktails, and local brews in a laid-back setting with views of Henderson Beach State Park. But the real reason to come on a Friday? Flutes et Frites — a weekly happy hour special featuring Veuve Clicquot and gourmet fries on the Sunset Terrace. It is exactly as good as it sounds.
Marina Cafe
Marina Cafe has been Destin’s most-awarded restaurant since 1988. The happy-hour bar scene here is the stuff of local legend. Every day from 5–7 pm, half-price wines, martinis, cocktails, domestic beers, and specially priced appetizers — in the bar area and out on the waterfront cocktail deck, with a thirty-foot window wall looking out over the Destin Harbor. The fish tacos and sushi happy hour specials are outstanding. If you can only do one happy hour in Destin, this is the one.
The Back Porch
The Back Porch has been a Destin fixture for decades, and for good reason. Sit on the deck overlooking the Gulf with a cold beer and a pile of raw oysters during happy hour (daily 3–5 pm) and try to have a bad time. You can’t. Draft beers run $3.75, house wines and wells are $5.00, and Bloody Marys and margaritas are $6.00. It’s not fancy — and that’s exactly the point. This is pure Destin.
Best Harbor Scene
For when you want energy, cold beer, fresh oysters, and a front-row seat to the action on the water.
AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar
AJ’s is loud, lively, and the heartbeat of Destin Harbor. What started as a humble oyster-shucking trailer has turned into a full-blown waterfront institution with multiple levels, live music on three stages, and a massive Jumbotron. Happy hour runs weekdays from 3 to 7 pm, with drink specials like $5 house wines, $5.25 draft beers, $7 Bimini Bash, and discounted oysters at $15 a dozen. It’s not a quiet sunset-sipping kind of place, but if you want energy and a great oyster deal, AJ’s delivers.
Boshamps Oyster House
Right on Harbor Blvd with front-row seats to the Destin Harbor action, Boshamps is a go-to for fresh oysters and cold drinks. Monday through Friday 3–6 pm at the bar: discounted well drinks, house wines, and domestic beer. No food specials. But honestly, order the Oysters Boshamps (baked with caramelized Vidalia onions, Alabama feta, and bacon marmalade) at any price, and you won’t regret it. Casual, no-pretense, harbor-side — you sit down for one drink and end up staying through dinner.
Tailfins
Tailfins sits right on the harbor with outdoor tables and a live music stage that gets going in the afternoons and evenings, making it one of the better spots for people-watching with a drink in hand. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday 3–6 pm: $7 specials on house wine, well drinks, margaritas, Mich Ultra — plus specials on peel and eat shrimp and fried pickles. Good vibes, good prices.
Harbor Docks
Harbor Docks has been feeding locals and fishermen since 1979. The happy hour deal here is one of the best-kept secrets on the harbor. From 4–5 pm daily: half-price appetizers, $2 off sushi, and discounts on well drinks and domestic beers. The sushi is one of the best in the area. The laid-back waterfront atmosphere makes it the kind of happy hour you don’t rush out of.
Best Craft Cocktails
For when you want something worth sipping slowly.
Bitterroot
Bitterroot is Destin’s farm-to-table cocktail bar, and it’s been quietly becoming one of the best places to drink (and eat) in town. The menu rotates with the seasons, the cocktails are genuinely creative, and the happy hour — every day from 3–6 pm — is one of the most generous around: all appetizers 30% off, $10 house cocktails, $5 beers, and $6 house wines. It’s elevated without being stuffy, and the kind of place that makes you want to linger.
The Red Door Saloon
If you want to drink where the locals actually drink, The Red Door Saloon is your place. No harbor views, no sushi specials — just cold, well-priced drinks, solid wings, a genuinely welcoming crowd, and some of the best sunset views you’ll find from a barstool in this town. A true local’s bar that has earned its reputation the honest way, year after year.
A Few Tips Before You Go
Happy hours in Destin typically run 3–6 pm, though Marina Cafe goes until 7 pm. Always worth checking ahead during peak summer season, when hours can shift. The harbor spots fill up fast on weekday evenings in June and July, so arriving closer to opening time is the smarter move. And if you’re heading to the Henderson properties, go early enough to catch both Horizons and the Rooftop — they’re steps apart and two very different, very worthy experiences.
