With Giving Tuesday just around the corner, this week’s Five Favorites on Friday post is highlighting five of my favorite local charities that are making a difference in my community.
Giving Tuesday is an annual observance that falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the United States. It was created in 2012 as a way to encourage people to give back to their communities. Whether it’s through donating money, volunteering time, or performing small acts of kindness, this day is all about supporting local charities and doing good in the world.
There are SO MANY organizations in need of support. The organizations I am featuring in this post are just a small fraction of charities that provide valuable services to those in need, including animal rescue, affordable housing, and healthcare.
I encourage you to consider supporting a charity that resonates with you and to spread positivity and generosity this Giving Tuesday. So, without further ado, let’s dive in!
Alaqua Animal Refuge 🐾
As a pet-lover, I cannot stress enough how important it is to support animal rescues. Alaqua Animal Refuge is a special one to me because I adopted my yellow lab Nicole through them (and I always say she was the one that rescued me). Alaqua Animal Refuge provides care and rehabilitation to all types of animals, including horses, pigs, cows, and more. They also offer a variety of programs to educate the public about animal care, safety, and adoption.
Habitat for Humanity Walton County 🏡
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that helps build affordable homes for low-income families. In Walton County, they’ve built over 60 houses this year alone and are currently working on more. Their annual Women Build event is especially dear to my heart as it empowers women through building and supports the Habitat mission.
Shelter House Fort Walton Beach 💜
Shelter House is dedicated to the support and healing of domestic violence survivors. Their mission is to provide emergency services and long-term support to empower survivors of abuse and their families. In addition to their crucial services, Shelter House also provides legal advocacy and education to the public about domestic violence.
Food for Thought Outreach 🎒
Started as a small family project in 2010, Food for Thought Outreach serves food-insecure students in Walton and Okaloosa counties. They ensure that every child has access to healthy and nutritious food even when they’re not in school. Through their weekly backpack program, they provide over 30,000 packages of food to local children in need.
Point Washington Medical Clinic ⚕️
Sometimes primary medical care is not affordable for everyone, and that’s where the Point Washington Medical Clinic comes in. They are a non-profit organization that provides medical care to everyone in the community, regardless of their ability to pay. They rely solely on donations to purchase medical supplies and pay their staff.
Giving Tuesday is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and do good. Whether you choose to donate to one of these charities or another organization, your generosity can make a world of difference. Let’s make this Giving Tuesday a day to remember by supporting our communities and spreading kindness.
