A full mahjong set is gorgeous sitting on your dining table. It is not gorgeous crammed into an already-full suitcase. If you play anywhere other than home (a beach trip, a friend’s house, a weekend away), a dedicated travel set solves a problem a standard set was never built for.
Why a Standard Set Doesn’t Travel Well
Most mahjong tiles are made thick and substantial on purpose. That heft is part of what makes a premium set feel good in your hands during play. But that same heft turns into dead weight in a carry-on, and a full 160-tile set with a rack and pusher can take up more suitcase space than a pair of shoes. If travel is a regular part of how you play, it’s worth having a set built specifically for that.
What to Look For in a Travel Set
A few things matter more for travel tiles than for a home set: thinner, lighter tiles that still feel sturdy in play; a compact, zippered or hard-shell case that can survive being tossed in a bag; and characters that stay crisp and readable even at a smaller, thinner scale, since some travel tiles shrink the tile size along with the depth.
The One I Recommend: Mahj Pit’s Commuter Skinny Tiles
Mahj Pit’s Commuter Skinny Tiles are the travel set I point people toward first. They’re thin and light without sacrificing readability, which is the exact balance a good travel set needs. Plenty of travel tiles go so thin that the characters become hard to read mid-game, and these don’t. The tile set currently runs $285 (add the bundle with travel mat, commuter bag, and travel racks for a discounted price of $495). Shop at mahjpit.co/jessjones, use code JESSJONES for 10% off.

Bespoke Mahjong Travel Tiles
If you want choices, Bespoke’s travel tiles come in a variety of colors and designs, and their travel kits bundle the tiles with a mini mat, racks, and a carrying bag. A new color just dropped on September 30, so it is worth checking what is in stock.

The Lucky Charms kit in Hamptons Pearl Blue is a best-seller. It has 160 tiles, four clear acrylic travel racks, a matching tile bag, and a compact double-sided game mat. BIG bonus – the whole kit weighs about 2 pounds. Shop Bespoke through my link and use code JESSJONES for 10% off.

Bespoke also just launched a collaboration with photographer Gray Malin (@graymalin) featuring his well-known dog photography. The Getaway Dogs travel kit comes with tiles, four clear acrylic racks, a double-sided mat in the Beverly Hills Dogs and Aspen Chair Lift Pups designs, and a travel bag. The collection is also available in a full-size set if you want the same look at home. I purchased the full-size Getaway Dogs set in white and absolutely love it! As a traveler and dog-lover, I simply couldn’t resist. Use code JESSJONES for 10% off the Gray Malin collection too.
Miss Mahjong Travel Bundle
Miss Mahjong has a travel collection with a travel bundle that makes it easy to buy everything you need for the road in one go. Shop Miss Mahjong through my link and use code JESSJONES for 10% off.
Already Compact: Tigre de Tartan
If you would rather have one nice set that is easier to travel with, Tigre de Tartan tiles are already compact, so they’re a good option for playing at home and on the go. Shop Tigre de Tartan through my link and use code JESSJONES for 10% off.
Travel Mats
A small mat makes a big difference for travel play. The travel mat from Mahj Pit is a favorite of mine, and you can buy it in a bundle with racks and a commuter bag. Fait à Main now has a travel mat too, and we may be getting a Tigre de Tartan travel mat soon.

The L’Été Indien: Voyage mat is 19.5 inches square, handpainted with a brown and blush basketweave check, and rolls up small. It can be personalized with a monogram. Shop Fait à Main through my link and use code JESSJONES for 10% off.
Another Option: Peace Love Mahjong’s Travel Line
If you want more travel-specific options, Peace Love Mahjong (a Dallas studio I mention in my Mahjong in Dallas guide) builds a dedicated travel collection with mini tiles, travel racks, roll-up mats, and a crossbody bag made for carrying a set through an airport. They’re not one of my affiliate partners, but it’s a genuinely good option if you want a full travel setup built by people who clearly fly with their tiles often.
A Few Packing Tips
If you skip a travel mat, a folded towel or the hotel comforter works in a pinch. Bring a small dry bag or pouch to keep tiles from rattling loose in your suitcase, and if you’re flying, pack the tile case in your carry-on rather than checked luggage. It’s a small, dense item that’s easy to lose track of in a checked bag and annoying to replace piece by piece if it goes missing.
Playing Mahjong at the Airport
A long layover is a perfect excuse for a quick game. There is now a Facebook group for mahjong players who want to meet up and play in airports. So if you are traveling with a set, you might find a table waiting near your gate. Join the airport mahjong meet-up group on Facebook.
A few things make airport play easier: bring a compact set, since gate seating and airport tables are small, and pack a folded towel or a small mat to keep tiles from sliding. Tiles are generally fine in a carry-on, but the officer at the checkpoint has the final say, so give yourself a few extra minutes.
